Both Sensei Paul and Sensei Eva have many years of experience in teaching Yoshinkan Aikido. (Sensei means “Teacher” in Japanese).


At Yoshinkan Aikido London we run regular beginners courses to help people get started. Beginners Courses run for 10 weeks with lessons on Wednesday evenings, and cost £95 (including a “Gi” - the white jacket and trousers worn for Yoshinkan Aikido).


Beginners Course Syllabus

  1. Week 1

    1. Introduction, demonstration of easy jiyu-waza (freestyle) techniques. Students have a go with experienced uke to throw.

    2. Overview of course, shown complete kihon dosa (basic movements). Shown relationship between kihon waza (basic techniques), techniques/self defence grip release, nikkajo, shihonage

    3. Seiza, Rei

  2. Week 2

    1. Kamae, unbendable arm, arm cutting action, posture centre line

    2. Hiriki no yosei ichi, with partner across mat raise and strike

    3. Grip release through thumb (refresh) double handed

    4. Body line elbow

    5. Katamochi kokyunage (with experienced uke)

    6. Kamae. seiza, Rei

  3. Week 3

    1. Kamae, Hiriki no yosei ichi revise

    2. Hiriki no yosei ni. Related techniques. Yonkajo exercise. Kotegaeshi wrist movement.

    3. Breakfalls, mat slapping, rolls intro

    4. Standing Rei. Revise kamae, Seiza.

  4. Week 4

    1. Kamae, Hiriki 1,2 revise

    2. Tai no henko 1, related techniques/applications sokumen, headlock

    3. Release/sokumen from double handed lapel grab

    4. Rear rolling

    5. Sword kamae

  5. Week 5

    1. Kamae, Hiriki 1,2 and Tai no henko 1 revise

    2. Tai no henko 2, related techniques. Hijiate 2, kokyu-nage 2, knife/punch block, hiji osae, hiji shime 2

    3. Yokomen inside turn block and related techniques

    4. Zempo kaiten ukemi

  6. Week 6

    1. Kamae. Hiriki 1,2 Tai no henko 1,2 revise

    2. Shumatsu dosa 1. Related techniques, basis of Ikkajo 1

    3. Yokomen block 2

    4. Shikoho

  7. Week 7

    1. Kamae. Shumatsu 1 revise

    2. Shumatsu 2, Related techniques

    3. All kihon dosa

    4. Breakfalls

  8. Week 8

    1. Kamae, shumatsu 1,2 revise

    2. Kihon dosa

    3. Ikkajo, Nikkajo, Sankajo, Yonkajo, hijishime 1

    4. Shihoko / breakfalls

  9. Week 9

    1. Kihon dosa revise

    2. Breakfall / shikoho warm up

    3. Ikkajo, Nikkajo, Yonkajo, Hijishime 2

  10. Week 10

    1. Revise grade and play
